Labor leader Andrew Barr says productive discussions to form a new parliamentary agreement are under way with the ACT Greens, who have taken a record six seats in the Legislative Assembly. Mr Barr also confirmed two territory budgets would be delivered in 2021, with two sets of budget and annual report estimates. “We are ready for the next term of government and looking forward to working with the ACT Greens to deliver a strong, experienced and progressive government for Canberrans,” Mr Barr said. Mr Barr said the ACT Labor caucus would meet on Monday morning to endorse the party’s leadership team and policy program for the next four-year term. “Labor’s program will focus on how the next ACT government can continue to lead the nation when it comes to addressing the impacts of climate change, ensuring government support continues to be directed to those who need it most, and how the government can support the growth of our employment base to more than 250,000 local jobs by 2025,” he said in a statement on Saturday. Mr Barr said Labor and the Greens had a strong mandate, with 16 of the 25 Assembly seats held by progressive members. “The combined primary vote of ACT Labor and the ACT Greens was more than 50 per cent of all votes cast – indicating that a majority of Canberrans are supportive of the shared policy agenda and parliamentary alliance between the two parties in the Legislative Assembly,” he said. Mr Barr said he regretted there was not greater cultural diversity in the Assembly. “This will be an important area of political focus over the next four years,” he said. Mr Barr also paid thanks to candidates and elected members, and to outgoing Labor members Bec Cody, Deepak-Raj Gupta and Gordon Ramsay, after the trio lost their seats.
