You can clean up your credit easier than most people because you’ve already made the first smart move. You’ve decided to get your act together and clean up your credit and below, you’ll find ten steps to do-it-yourself credit repair.

The first thing you want to do is request a free copy of your credit report. Before it arrives, step numbers two and three are easy and you can do them anytime. Gather all of your bills together and list out who you owe. Then, make sure you have bills and statements for everyone you owe. If not, add this to your list and put an asterisk by those you owe that do not report to a credit bureau.

Fourth, when your credit report comes in, you’ll want to go over it and categorize it. List the open accounts, the delinquent accounts, those accounts in good standing and those that are open accounts that you didn’t open. You’ll want to be sure you are on top of these accounts and ready to act with your good name in mind should you need to make an inquiry.

Fifth, call up any and all open accounts that should be closed and show as a paid off account. Sixth, call up any and all creditors reporting that you didn’t know reported because you were unaware of the account. Find out if you need to write letters to have the false data removed from your account.

How To Stay Organized When Writing Credit Dispute Letters

You can stay organized when you begin working on your credit history but how to stay organized when writing constant dispute letters can become a fifty million dollar question. Yes, it is tougher than it looks. When you have to maintain some records for the letters you write, you discover quickly, this is quite a task.

When you spot something on your credit report that you were unaware existed, you’ll typically have to begin writing letters to have it removed from your record. You’ll need to first find out who can help you get the item removed from your credit. You’ll first want to call and find out who can help you do this from the company. If you can get the name and address of the person you need to contact, you’re one step ahead many.

Once you have the name and address of the person you need to contact, go ahead and write the letter you want to write and then log the information for safe keeping. You should do this online if you have a computer. You can write the letter you want to write and save it in a word document. After you hit “save” what you’ll want to do is save it according to the date you sent the letter. For example, if Capital One is the contact, you would save it as “Capital One December 09, 2009” or something similar.

You have to figure out how to stay organized when writing constant dispute letters because when you have to write these letters, you’ll quickly discover that many of the letters you write will conveniently disappear or they’ll vanish for a convenient amount of time. Many of the companies that are reporting false information on the credit history of an unsuspecting consumer will not really know how to take care of removing the data. Keep in mind, a lot of credit card companies and other places that extend credit have a large staff turnover so getting to the right person is often difficult. Finding one that will help you is more difficult, often next to impossible.

Why Repair Your Credit Yourself?

You could hire someone to help you repair your credit. In fact, if you want to hire someone to help you repair your credit and you know you can’t do it yourself, then it is probably a good business move. However, if you are capable of making a few phone calls and know you have the ability to get things done then you should try to take on the task alone rather than ask yourself why. Repair your credit yourself and you’ll understand that it can be a difficult undertaking and it can be time consuming. However, if you make the effort, then you’ll discover that it is well worth your time!

Repairing your own credit takes a little initiative. You can get your credit back in shape if you’ll first take the time to make inquiries on the outstanding credit reporting issues that you know you did not initiate. You don’t want people to pull your credit if you don’t know they are pulling it and you want to make sure that those who do pull your credit are pulling it for the right reasons.

Another thing to watch for is something that is very damaging to your credit. Finance companies are notorious for tarnishing a consumer’s credit history. If you have a loan with a small finance company, you need to avoid rolling the loan over. Every time you roll the loan over or postpone making a payment, most finance companies record and report it. They make a point to show this on your credit report.

When you want to repair your credit yourself, you should make sure you take the time to catch the little things. This means watching for open accounts that are paid off and take the time to be sure you are marked as paid off rather than charged off. You don’t need a charge-off falsely reported and sometimes this honest mistake happens. It is your job to make sure it doesn’t happen too frequently and it is your job to make sure it is taken care of immediately when it does happen.
